Miniature linear guides are closer to a de-facto standard across brands than most engineers expect. If you know the series you are replacing, you can usually find a dimensionally compatible DDJ guide without touching the machine design — provided you check preload, accuracy and seals.

Substitution is a two-part exercise: match the mechanical envelope, then match the performance class. Getting the first right and the second wrong is how a working drop-in turns into a rework job.

Step 1 — Identify what you are replacing

Read the full designation off the part or the drawing, not just the series. A typical miniature guide code carries the series, size, carriage type, preload and accuracy grade. Also note the rail length and hole count, and the number of carriages per rail.

Step 2 — Match the series and size

The table below maps DDJ STE series guides to the most common equivalents. The standard (C) carriage types are shown; long (L) and wide (W) variants follow the same correspondence.

PMI, NB and the remaining SE-series equivalents are available on request. Always confirm against the dimensional drawing for your specific model before releasing a design change.

Step 3 — Confirm the performance class

Envelope compatibility is necessary but not sufficient. Four items decide whether the substitute actually behaves the same way:

  • Preload class. A clearance-fit guide in place of a preloaded one introduces play under reversing load — visible as lost motion at the tool.
  • Accuracy grade. Straightness and parallelism tolerances are grade-dependent. Downgrading a grade on an inspection or metrology axis is usually a mistake.
  • Seal and end-plate option. Sealing sets the contamination resistance. In dusty or washdown environments, downgrading seals shortens life more than any load calculation will.
  • Rail length and hole pattern. Match centre-to-centre pitch and hole count; if the original length is non-standard, specify a custom cut and confirm end distances on the order drawing.

Step 4 — Replace the carriage, not the rail

If the machine already runs DDJ guides, the interchangeable system allows the carriage to be replaced on its own. Rails and carriages are produced under controlled dimensional tolerances so compatible components can be assembled independently. That means no re-datuming, no realignment of parallel rails, and a dramatically smaller spare-parts inventory.

Compare the business case. Replacing a carriage instead of a complete rail-and-carriage assembly cuts maintenance cost, shortens machine downtime to minutes, and reduces the stock you need to carry to keep a line running.

What we need from you

To confirm a substitution we need: the original brand and full model code, the dimensional drawing or measured envelope, preload and accuracy requirements, the environment, and the quantity you expect to use. Send those and DDJ will return the equivalent model plus the drawing to check.
